Library

The Anglo European School Library is physically at the centre of the school and actively seeks to be the heart of the school, providing a safe, welcoming and stimulating environment to support pupils and staff in the process of learning, teaching, and personal development through the provision of high-quality book collections and information services.

The Library supports the school’s ethos and multicultural dimension, reflected in its international resources and support of foreign languages. The library aims to raise the standard of literacy by encouraging the love of reading to students via the provision of an attractive and relevant resource collection alongside developing their skills in information literacy via Library lessons resulting in lifelong independent learners and confident and responsible adults.

“We are grateful for all you have done for us, whether supplying us with study materials, a book recommendation or a little check in. This Library & Study Club has helped shaped me as a young woman, making me even more determined to succeed & work hard to achieve it.”

Library Information

The main Anglo European School Library is open throughout the school day. It is a vibrant, busy and popular area of the school where students can study, work and read in an engaging environment. All students and staff are automatically members of the Library and can borrow up to three resources at a time for a maximum of three weeks.

As well as 30 computers linked to the internet with coloured printing availability, there are tables and seating areas for individual and/or class use. There are also sofas and comfortable chairs to enhance quiet reading time and an excellent, well-stocked, and up-to-date selection of resources to facilitate effective study and support wider reading.

All students can access our online catalogue – Oliver – to search and reserve over 10,000 resources in our collection. Our fiction collection contains a large variety of books chosen to appeal to students of all ages, from year 7 to Sixth form, ranging from contemporary fiction to established classics and a growing selection of foreign language books. Our graphic novels and Manga sections are especially popular.

Should younger students wish access to books recommended over their age group, they can request a 14+ Permission form from the Librarian.

The reference and non-fiction are arranged using the Dewey Decimal system and contain resources to support the curriculum as well as student interests and hobbies. We also offer a selection of magazines, journals, and online resources as well as a comprehensive selection of KS3 and GCSE study guides. Career information, local college and university prospectuses and apprenticeship information are also available to all year groups.

There is an ongoing programme by the Librarian to review and update our stock to ensure the collection is always inviting and up-to-date. Recommendations are always welcome, and we love fulfilling student requests.

Library Events

Activities, competitions, and events take place in the Library throughout the year; events include World Book Day and the Carnegie Medal Shadowing Club. Constantly changing displays advertise new books and are often linked to national and international events including Black History Month, PRIDE, and International Women’s Day.

Student Librarians

Students who are interested in the Library can become Student Librarians and take responsibility for the Library desk, shelving and displays.

Library Lessons

All students in Years 7 & 8 participate in one Library lesson per cycle, where they can read and use the library. The Librarian has developed an extensive reading and Library skills programme for these lessons, ranging from Harry Potter Day to referencing techniques when conducting research. All students sit a reading test in Year 7 to check they are reading at expected levels and intervention is arranged for those who need a little extra help. A sixth-form mentor reading scheme also occurs twice a week for some Year 7s during tutor period.

Sixth Form

The Sixth Form are welcome to use the main school library to browse and study; and a modern fiction section has been curated for them to encourage reading for pleasure; titles include classics and the latest blockbusters.

There is also a dedicated Sixth Form Library within the Sixth Form Centre. The William Tweed Reference Library includes academic resources, study guides, periodicals and careers information tailored to meet the needs of the Sixth Form.
